Match report
Yousef Salech recovered from having a penalty saved to score the only goal as Cardiff City beat Birmingham City 1–0 at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday 24 October. The result gave Cardiff a third successive home win and preserved the club’s unbeaten home league record. Salech had returned to the starting side after Krystian Bielik was injured in the warm-up, according to Cardiff’s official report.
Salech responds to penalty save
James Beadle stopped Salech’s spot-kick after Perry Ng was pulled back while trying to reach a corner. Salech then converted the opening that mattered, holding off a defender and turning to finish from Ollie Tanner’s first-time delivery. Cardiff took the lead into half-time after a first half with few clear chances. Beadle also pushed away an Alex Robertson free-kick before the interval. The home side continued to create opportunities after the break. Cian Ashford was denied following a move involving Tanner and Salech, with the rebound blocked. Salech sent another effort past the post after Joel Colwill won possession and released him.
Trott protects the lead
A further move involving Jack Moylan and Ashford ended with another Birmingham block. Salech also threatened from Joel Bagan’s corner as Cardiff looked for a second goal. Birmingham’s best late opportunity brought a save from Nathan Trott, and Cardiff defended a final corner to keep the clean sheet. Cardiff’s report identifies Wolves away as the next league trip. Sportmonks records Cardiff with 52% possession and 16 shots, including 10 from inside the box, against Birmingham’s 48% and seven shots. Cardiff put four attempts on target to Birmingham’s two.
