Cardiff City are one of three Championship clubs still without a win after four games, and the only one of the three to have lost just once in the league: Burnley have lost twice, Preston all four. Three league draws and then Wednesday's defeat at QPR leave Cardiff City 19th of 24 on three points. Portsmouth sit 21st on the same three points, two places below, and have conceded eight. Only three of the 24 clubs have conceded more, and Wolves and Millwall are level with Portsmouth on eight. Cardiff City have also lost a forward in the week of the game. Kion Etete, who Cardiff City say has scored nine goals for the Bluebirds in all competitions to date, has joined Newport County on loan for the rest of 2026/27. That is the latest departure of a window that has also taken Tanatswa Nyakuhwa, Cody Twose, Eli King, Alyas Debono and Roko Simic, and no player has arrived at Cardiff City since Krystian Bielik on 26 August. Portsmouth went the other way on deadline day, signing forward Tyrese Shade from Burton Albion on a three-year deal. Brian Barry-Murphy, in charge of Cardiff City, had already named what went wrong at QPR. "I don't think we were at our best in the first half, and we didn't have the technical level that we normally have," he said. Barry-Murphy also said: "We just didn't find the right levels today and as such probably suffered for it."

Cardiff City have won two of the four Championship meetings between the clubs, Portsmouth one, and the August 2011 game at Fratton Park finished 1-1. Portsmouth have opened a book of condolence for Alan Knight in the Legends Lounge behind the Fratton End, next to the Victory Suite, open 10am to 7pm until Friday. A second book is in the Fratton Park FanZone before Saturday's game, and there is an online book. Knight, a goalkeeper who played 801 games for Portsmouth, died on Tuesday aged 65.
