Swansea City go to a Southampton side 19th on points and second on goal difference

Southampton have scored 11 goals and conceded six in five Championship games, a goal difference of plus five that only Swansea City better, on plus six. The 19th place beside it is the least useful number on that table for working out how hard Tuesday night at St Mary's Stadium is going to be.

The deduction is on the record. An EFL Independent Disciplinary Commission ruled on 19 May 2026 that Southampton be docked four points, applied to the 2026/27 Championship table, after the club admitted breaches of EFL regulations over the unauthorised filming of other clubs' training, in breaches the EFL says concerned fixtures against Oxford United in December 2025, Ipswich Town in April 2026 and Middlesbrough in May 2026. The same ruling removed Southampton from the 2026 play-offs and reinstated Middlesbrough. A League Arbitration Panel dismissed Southampton's appeal on 20 May, and under EFL regulations that decision is final. Two wins and two draws from five games are worth eight points on the pitch, and adding the four back, which is arithmetic on the EFL's table and not a standing, would put Southampton eighth of the 24 clubs.

Swansea City arrive with the meanest defence of those 24 clubs. One goal conceded in five Championship games is the fewest in the division and three fewer than QPR and Wrexham, the next best, on four. Vitor Matos, the Swansea City head coach, picked out the clean sheet after Saturday's goalless draw with Wrexham. "I'm really happy with the clean sheet. We competed really well and we wanted to win, but unfortunately we couldn't score in the last third in the way we wanted," Matos said. Recent history runs the other way. Southampton have won four of the last five meetings between the clubs and drawn the other, and Swansea City have not won any of the five. The most recent was a 2-1 Southampton win at the Swansea.com Stadium in April.

Neither club had published team news for Tuesday by Sunday morning, so no line-up is worth printing yet. Swansea City said on 13 August that Cameron Burgess is "set for a significant spell on the sidelines" after scans confirmed a ruptured Achilles, and that he would undergo surgery. Gonçalo Franco, who has had ankle surgery, was given an expected 10 to 12 week recovery when the club announced it on 16 July.
