Match report

Swansea City beat Burnley 3-1 at Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday, with substitutes Ronald and Zan Vipotnik combining to settle the game after Largie Ramazani had cut the home side's lead. Adam Idah and Moussa Yeo scored before half-time, and Vipotnik restored the two-goal advantage in the 68th minute.

Idah and Yeo put Swansea ahead

Idah opened the scoring, finishing left-footed from the centre of the penalty area. Yeo made it two in the 33rd after Elijah Just supplied him on a fast break, placing a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner.

Burnley had a chance to reduce the deficit before the interval when Aaron Ramsey shot from outside the box, but Lawrence Vigouroux saved. Swansea began the second half with Filip Lissah on for Josh Key and soon threatened again, Max Weiss saving from Yeo in the 49th minute.

The double change brings a third

Ramazani brought Burnley back into the game in the 58th minute, finishing left-footed after Igor Julio's through ball. Swansea responded with a double substitution six minutes later: Ronald replaced Yeo and Vipotnik took over from Idah.

The pair combined four minutes after coming on. Ronald provided the assist and Vipotnik finished right-footed from the centre of the box, restoring the margin Swansea had held at half-time. Weiss later saved from Just, before Goncalo Franco replaced Just in the 77th minute.

Vigouroux protected the lead late on, saving from Andreas Hountondji in the 87th minute and again in added time. Armando Broja also had an effort saved between those chances, as Burnley tried to find a way back.

The result was an immediate response to Tuesday's 3-1 defeat at Southampton. Swansea's opening seven league matches have brought four wins, two draws and one defeat, with 14 points. Burnley remain without a Championship win after seven games, with three draws and four defeats.

Matos praises the response

Head coach Vitor Matos praised Swansea’s work-rate and response to the Southampton defeat. He said: “The first two goals are part of our idea, and what we really want and work for.”

Widell calls for consistency

Melker Widell said Swansea must sustain a high work-rate even when play on the ball is not going to plan. Speaking to the club after playing on the flank against Burnley, he said: “Even if it is not your day on the ball, you can still do your part by working hard.” Widell also stressed the need for consistency and a tighter group as Swansea try to build on the win.

Swansea finished with 54% possession and 6 shots on target to Burnley's 6, from 13 attempts to the visitors' 18. The home league record remains unbeaten. Swansea next visit Lincoln City on 19 September at 15:00 BST.

Correction, 13 September: Swansea’s 14 attempts and seven shots on target were incorrect. The corrected totals are 13 and six, and Burnley goalkeeper Max Weiss made two saves, not three.
