WATFORD
Preview
Swansea City come home third, unbeaten and off the best ninety minutes any Welsh side has produced this season. At Pride Park on Saturday the visitors had 23 shots, put 12 on target, reached 3.33 expected goals and did not let Derby County force a single save. Seven points from three, plus four on goal difference, and Lawrence Vigouroux has two clean sheets already. Watford come to the Swansea.com Stadium on Tuesday night with a record almost as tidy: 9th, five points, no league defeat either, a 2-1 win over Southampton and draws at Wrexham and at home to West Ham.
Vitor Matos has spent the opening month insisting the numbers belong to the group rather than the scorers. "The whole team put in a good performance. The strikers defended and pressed, the midfielders made the team compact and then the defenders could give us much more stability," the head coach said after Derby, and he was as pleased with the bench: "the players that came into the side and that came on from the bench made a big impact on the game." Three of those substitutes arrived together on 65 minutes, and the fourth, Ronald, scored.
The depth argument now has a 4 million euro exhibit. Stephen Eustaquio, signed from Porto, came off the bench at Derby and needed 25 minutes to register an assist and a 7.2 rating, the best return per minute in the away side. A Tuesday night three days after a lunchtime kick-off is exactly the fixture a squad gets bought for.
Watford will not arrive nervous, unbeaten in the league, and the last four meetings have gone one apiece with two draws, Swansea winning the most recent 2-0 at Vicarage Road in January. The caution for Swansea is that Watford's only defeat of the season was a 1-5 League Cup evening at home to Peterborough, which is either a warning about the level or an outlier, and Tuesday decides which. Kick-off is 19:45, tickets are on general sale through the club.
