Swindon Town 0-2 Newport County

Newport County opened the club's EFL Trophy campaign with a 2-0 win at Swindon Town, Newport's first away victory of the season. Ged Garner scored in the fourth minute before Tanatswa Nyakuhwa added the second with 10 minutes left.

Garner strikes early

Nyakuhwa won the ball after a misplaced pass by Swindon goalkeeper Lewis Ward and Garner rounded the keeper to score. Garner then had a penalty saved after Nyakuhwa was fouled in the box, while Yahya Bamba hit the post before half-time.

Swindon had 60% of possession but managed only one shot on target from 12 attempts. Newport produced 14 shots, put five on target and had 11 efforts from inside the penalty area.

Nyakuhwa finishes it

Bamba sent Nyakuhwa through in the 80th minute and the Cardiff City loanee drove the ball into the net. Nyakuhwa finished with a goal and an assist and received API-Football’s highest rating of the match, 8.24.

Jake Turner made his Newport debut and saved from Joseph Hungbo late on as County kept Newport's second clean sheet of the season. Harrison Halpin also made his first competitive appearance for the club.
