Wrexham are eleventh in the Championship after five games and have not conceded in either of the last two, a 3-0 at Millwall on 2 September and a 0-0 at Swansea City on Saturday, both away. Burnley are 24th of 24 on two points, with twelve goals conceded and a goal difference of minus six, both the worst in the division. Wrexham's four conceded are the joint second-fewest of the 24 Championship clubs, level with QPR.

Burnley and Cardiff City are the only two of the Championship's 24 clubs still without a win. Burnley have not won a league match since a 3-2 at Crystal Palace on 11 February, in the Premier League. Twelve of the 17 were in the Premier League, before Burnley came down. Sixteen league games went by without a win before Saturday, when a home defeat by Bristol City made it 17. Nicky Hayen took the Burnley job in July. The five league games since the season began have brought Burnley two draws and three defeats, and six goals scored, the same number Wrexham have scored. Both have scored six. Wrexham have conceded four, Burnley twelve: the gap between eleventh and bottom is all at the other end of the pitch.

Wrexham had eight shots at Swansea City to Swansea City's six, and six of Wrexham's inside the box to three, though only one of the eight was on target, on 39 per cent of the ball. Callum O'Hare, signed on transfer deadline day, made his Wrexham debut in that game. "We can rest and recover now, and look forward to a great night at the Racecourse on Tuesday," Phil Parkinson said afterwards.

Wrexham have published no team news for Burnley, no injury list and no press conference. The Wrexham news pages on Sunday carried Saturday's reaction, in which Callum O'Hare looks ahead to Tuesday, and no team news. The licensed data feed's injuries list names Sebastian Revan and George Thomason as Wrexham absentees, with Nathan Broadhead, Liberato Cacace and Ben Sheaf doubtful, none of it confirmed by the club. The clubs last met in competitive football on 11 March 2000, a 1-0 Burnley win at the Racecourse Ground in the old Division Two. Burnley signed Jamie Vardy on Sunday, on a contract to the end of the season, and the club's own announcement quotes Nicky Hayen welcoming him. That is after this preview first went out.
