Barry hepatitis A walk-in is shut today, then open until 5 September

The walk-in hepatitis A clinic at Barry Hospital is closed today for the August bank holiday. It reopens on Tuesday, 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, and Public Health Wales says that offer runs until Saturday 5 September. No appointment is needed. The address is Colcot Road, Barry, CF62 8YH.

The jab is for children aged 1 to 5 who live in Barry, or who go to a school, nursery or other childcare setting in the town. Public Health Wales is still calling the Barry outbreak ongoing. On 19 August it reported 11 confirmed cases in the town since December 2025. The 27 August notice, the one that turned the clinic into a walk-in, does not give a newer total.

Susan Mably, Consultant in Health Protection at Public Health Wales, said: "As families start preparing for the new school year, we are asking parents and carers of eligible children in Barry to put hepatitis A vaccination on their back-to-school to-do list." Young children can have very mild symptoms, or none, and still pass the virus on. Hepatitis A is a liver infection, usually spread through close contact or food and drink contaminated with infected faeces.

Dr Claire Beynon, Executive Director of Public Health at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, said the clinic is now walk-in so parents can pick a day that works. A single dose, Public Health Wales said on 19 August, gives between 94 and 100 percent protection within days. Wash hands with soap and warm water after the toilet or a nappy change, and before food. Anyone with symptoms should phone a GP or NHS 111 Wales before turning up at a surgery.
