Clayton had reached that stage by beating the Hungarian Laszlo Kadar 6-3 in the second round on Saturday night, ending the run of a qualifier who had stunned Daryl Gurney 6-5 on Friday in front of a home crowd. Neither Gerwyn Price nor Nick Kenny made the field, so Clayton carried Wales alone.
Smith went through to the quarter-finals on an afternoon that also took out Michael van Gerwen, beaten 4-6 by Nathan Aspinall, and Josh Rock, beaten 3-6 by Chris Dobey.
The tournament is over, and Clayton went out to the man who won it. Smith beat Dave Chisnall 6-2 in the quarter-final, Danny Noppert 7-3 in the semi-final and Gary Anderson 8-2 in the final, a second European Tour title and 35,000 pounds. The European Tour moves on to Prague and the Czech Darts Open from 4 to 6 September.
