Dee rescues Dragons draw as last kick hits the post

Elliot Dee’s late try rescued a 19–19 draw for Dragons at Benetton, before Tinus de Beer struck the post with the conversion that could have won the United Rugby Championship opener. Dragons recovered from 19–7 down at half-time to take two points from Treviso.

A second-half recovery

Benetton led 14–0 through tries from François Mey and Bautista Bernasconi, both converted by Jacob Umaga. De Beer replied after Anzelo Tuitavuki, Seb Davies and Thomas Young combined, but Ignacio Mendy’s try restored a 12-point home advantage before the break. Fine Inisi finished a move involving Rio Dyer and debutant Tuitavuki early in the second half. De Beer’s conversion brought Dragons within five points, and the visitors kept Benetton scoreless for the rest of the match.

The late chances

Che Hope had a try ruled out after the television match official identified a knock-on by Huw Anderson. Umaga then missed a long-range penalty before Dragons forced a way back to the Benetton line. Dee finished the driving attack in the 78th minute on the Dragons match timeline. De Beer’s difficult conversion hit the left post, leaving the scores level rather than completing a winning comeback.

What the opener leaves Dragons

The official Dragons report records three tries and two successful conversions for each side. Dragons scored 12 unanswered points after the interval, calculated from the 19–7 half-time and 19–19 final scores. That recovery secured two league points before the visit of Scarlets to Rodney Parade. There was also an early setback for Evan Minto, who left the field after five minutes and was replaced by Shane Lewis-Hughes. No diagnosis is given in the club report.
