Glangwili wards switch to electronic patient observations

Electronic patient observations have been introduced across adult inpatient wards at Glangwili Hospital, Hywel Dda University Health Board has announced. The system allows staff to record patients’ vital signs digitally instead of using paper observations. The health board says that makes information more visible to clinical teams and helps staff recognise when a patient may need extra care.
Where the rollout stands
The announcement, published on 15 October, says work at Withybush Hospital and several community sites is nearing completion. That is a different stage from the completed adult-ward deployment at Glangwili. Further hospital sites are planned during 2026–27 as part of the national programme with Digital Health and Care Wales. The system is supplied by Alcidion.
What remains to be measured
Hywel Dda reports positive early staff feedback and says electronic observations support safer, more responsive care. The release does not provide a measured reduction in harm or a quantified time saving. It also does not establish that every ward or hospital across the health board is already using the system.
