M4 closed eastbound between Lon Las and Llandarcy after a crash

The M4 is closed eastbound between junction 44 at Lon Las and junction 43 at Llandarcy after an accident. Traffic Wales published the alert at one minute past midnight and logs it as an incident with the severity set to road closure. It has not been updated since. Anyone heading east out of Swansea towards Neath, Port Talbot and Cardiff will need to come off the motorway.

Traffic Wales gives a start and an end date of today but no reopening time, and unlike the planned closures on the same board this one carries no published diversion. What happened, how many vehicles were involved and whether anyone was hurt are all details the alert does not give. South Wales Police has issued no statement; its newsroom carries nothing later than 28 August.

The rest of the network

Of the 19 alerts on the Traffic Wales board overnight, the M4 crash is the only one logged as an incident. The other 18 are scheduled: overnight slip road work on the M4 at Coryton, Cardiff Gate and Lon Las, cyclic maintenance on the A55 at St Asaph, Waen and Pont Dafydd, resurfacing on the A465 and on the A458 at Buttington, and the bridge closure between Abergavenny and Raglan that has been running since July.

Drivers should note a second, separate closure in the same place. A planned Traffic Wales alert takes the M4 eastbound exit slip at Lon Las out of use from 20:00 to 06:00 tonight and tomorrow night for works, with diversions in place. Elsewhere the picture is quiet: Transport for Wales reported no ongoing disruptions, there are no Met Office warnings in force for Wales, and Natural Resources Wales listed no flood warnings or alerts.
