The Port Talbot proposal would create a walking and cycling link across the River Afan, with planning and listed-building applications still to follow the consultation.

People can comment until 10 November on plans to restore Port Talbot’s Grade II listed Newbridge Road Bridge and bring it back into use for walking and cycling. Asbri Planning is running the pre-application consultation for Neath Port Talbot Council. Its notice was published on 13 October and sets out the proposed bridge restoration alongside a route along Riverside Road from the Afan Way roundabout.

What the proposal covers

The planning statement describes a bridge currently closed to public use. The scheme would restore the crossing, change the road layout along Riverside Road and provide a shared walking and cycling route, new lighting and a utility trench. The proposed link is intended to give people a more direct route across the River Afan and improve connections to National Cycle Network Route 4.

How to respond

The drawings and supporting reports are available on Asbri’s consultation page. Comments can be emailed to mail@asbriplanning.co.uk or sent to Asbri Planning Ltd, Suite D, 1st Floor, 220 High Street, Swansea, SA1 1NW, by 10 November 2026. This is consultation before the planning and listed-building consent applications. It does not confirm permission, a construction start date or a date for the bridge to reopen.
