971 crimes and anti-social behaviour reports were recorded within a mile of the centre of Newport in June, 106 more than in May and the highest month since last July. The twelve months to June average 820 a month, so June ran 151 above the city's own norm. Wales went the other way. Across the four forces the June count fell by 536 on May, to 26,715, and of the thirty towns Cover tracks at the same one-mile geography only Newport and Barry reached a twelve-month high. Cardiff recorded 1,361, short of its own peak. Swansea fell by 80 to 650. Wrexham fell by 135 to 464.
The rise is not one category. Comparing the first half of 2026 with the last half of 2025, burglary went from 144 cases to 202, vehicle crime from 184 to 243, and anti-social behaviour from 885 to 1,000. Violent crime, the largest category at 3,020 over the year, stood at 1,510 in both halves. Shoplifting eased from 560 to 539, public order from 534 to 502, and drugs offences from 150 to 132. The half-year total still rose, from 4,871 to 4,975.
What happened next
The outcomes are the part of the record most readers never see. Gwent Police closed 2,160 violent crime cases in Newport in the twelve months, with 860 still under investigation. 128 of the closed cases ended in a charge or in court, one in seventeen. 1,500 were closed with no further action, and 450 were closed because no suspect was identified. Shoplifting closed differently: 350 of 965 closed cases ended in a charge, roughly one in three, though 449 closed with no suspect. Burglary produced 34 charges from 231 closed cases and 162 files with no suspect. Vehicle crime produced six charges from 347 closed cases. Drugs offences carried the highest charge share, 81 of 206, with a further 53 settled out of court.
The source names streets as well as outcomes. Cambrian Road, by the railway station, carried 113 violent crime reports in the year and 290 of the city's 1,099 shoplifting reports, more than a quarter of the total on one street. Skinner Lane carried 87 violent crime reports and 21 burglaries, the most of any named street for both breaking-in and, after Cambrian Road, for violence. Queensway, Market Street and Griffin Street follow, each with 59 to 65 violent crime reports. Every one of those streets sits inside the city centre.
Who can change it
Gwent Police records each crime and decides the outcome of most cases; a charge in a serious case is a Crown Prosecution Service decision. The Home Office publishes the returns monthly and adds outcomes to earlier months as cases close, which is why the rates above use closed cases only. June's 860 open violent crime files will settle in later releases, and every settled file moves the charge count.
