Powys is to get £244,950 of Welsh Government funding for three cycle hub projects before the Tour de France Grand Départ comes to Wales in 2027, Powys County Council has announced. Stage 4 starts in Welshpool and travels through Powys towards Cardiff.

Where the money goes

£100,000 is for the North Powys Cycle Hubs Project and £100,000 for the South Powys Cycle Hubs Project. £44,950 goes to the Welshpool Cycle Hub project. The hubs will provide cycle parking, repair stations, bike-wash facilities, e-bike charging, route improvements, signage and visitor information. The council says they will point cyclists to nearby attractions including Powis Castle and the National Cycle Museum.

What the council said

Cllr Glyn Preston, Cabinet Member for a More Prosperous Powys, said the investment would help "make sure the benefits of the Tour are felt long after the race". He said the council was already working on how to support local businesses and communities to make the most of the event.

The wider fund

The Powys projects are part of a £4.5 million Welsh Government investment in cycling tourism across Wales ahead of the Grand Départ, which includes £3.19 million for 54 projects. The council has not said when the hubs will open.
