Powys Teaching Health Board has been allocated £3.5 million to help patients facing long waits for planned treatment and to improve access to diagnostic tests. The board announced the funding on 1 October. Most of it will support work to prevent waits exceeding 104 weeks, or two years, from referral to treatment.

How cross-border treatment will be funded

For Powys residents treated in England, the money goes to Powys Teaching Health Board, which will work with English NHS trusts to secure extra treatment activity. For residents treated elsewhere in Wales, funding goes directly to the health board providing the service. The package also includes investment in diagnostic services within Powys. The announcement does not set out how many extra appointments or procedures will be bought, how the £3.5 million is divided, or when individual patients will be seen. It is a funding commitment, not evidence that the longest waits have already ended.

Part of an existing Welsh funding package

The allocation sits within a £145 million Welsh Government package announced in June. That national total is therefore not a new announcement in October. The government originally set out £100 million for reducing waiting lists and waiting times, £25 million for surgical and diagnostic hubs, and £20 million for NHS estate maintenance. Those are the national allocations, not a breakdown of Powys’s £3.5 million. The distinction matters: funding hospital buildings, adding diagnostic capacity and buying treatment are different uses of the same wider package. The Powys release describes the intended work but does not publish delivery figures against it.
