Prince Charles neonatal team recognised for keeping babies with mothers

The neonatal team at Prince Charles Hospital has received its trophy after being named Neonatal Team of the Year by the Neonatal Nurses Association, Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board says. The winners were announced on 14 October, with the trophy presented on 21 October. The recognition is for a pathway intended to help more newborn babies receive breathing support while staying with their mothers when it is safe.
What the pathway changes
Breathe Together with ARC, meaning Admission Reduction through CPAP, supports babies born close to or at full term who develop breathing difficulties after birth. The board says continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and enhanced clinical assessment can allow some babies to remain alongside their mothers rather than being admitted to the neonatal unit. The approach does not remove the need for admission where a baby’s condition requires it.
What is known about its impact
The board reports fewer unnecessary neonatal admissions and says the work has been shared with Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend. The announcement does not publish admission counts, a comparison period or a percentage reduction. It recognises the team’s work without providing enough figures to quantify the change.

Where this sits
The award announcement date, 14 October, differs from the trophy presentation on 21 October.
The board reports a reduction in admissions but publishes no numerical measure of that reduction.
