Charitable donations fund wire-free breast-surgery system at Snowdrop

Charitable donations have funded a wire-free system to help surgeons locate targeted breast tissue at the Snowdrop Breast Centre in Llantrisant, Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board has confirmed. The Pintuition system was paid for through CTM NHS Charity’s Giving to Pink fund. In its 14 October update, the health board says the technology offers an alternative to traditional wire-based localisation techniques.

What the equipment changes
The system helps the clinical team identify the area of breast tissue targeted during surgery. The board says it gives surgeons greater flexibility in planning and delivering care and can make the experience more comfortable for patients. Those benefits are the health board’s account. The announcement does not give the equipment’s cost, the number of patients treated with it or a measured change in waiting times.
Community support for the centre
Giving to Pink donations have also supported artwork and improvements to patient spaces at Snowdrop. The latest equipment adds a clinical use for that charitable support. Snowdrop is based just outside the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. The health board’s 2023 opening announcement describes a dedicated breast-care centre for patients referred by their GP, bringing diagnostic and follow-up services into one setting. The latest update concerns equipment within that established service. It does not announce a new hospital or a change to patient referral arrangements.
