Torfaen schools invited to join clothing-reuse challenge

The scheme starts on 21 October and includes uniform and costume swaps. Its seven-million-litre water target is an estimate, rather than a measured saving.

Schools across Torfaen are being invited to join a clothing-reuse challenge starting on Wednesday 21 October, with uniform exchanges and costume swaps counting towards a county-wide target. Keep Wales Tidy is delivering the Torfaen Water Saving Challenge through Eco-Schools Wales in partnership with Torfaen County Borough Council, with Welsh Government funding.

How the target is counted

Participating schools will record the number of items reused or swapped and submit monthly totals. The campaign assigns an estimated 2,000 litres of water to each item towards a seven-million-litre target by May 2027. That is an accounting estimate linked to the water used in clothing production. It is not a measurement of water saved in Torfaen, or a result already achieved. The announcement does not provide a local measurement method or evidence that each swap replaces a new purchase.

Dates and joining details

The challenge runs until 28 May 2027. An online launch workshop for pupils on 12 November will introduce the project and activities to help schools begin. Schools with existing uniform exchanges, Christmas jumper swaps or costume exchanges can take part, alongside those starting a reuse scheme. Schools can register interest by emailing Jo.Walters@keepwalestidy.cymru, the public contact given by Keep Wales Tidy.
