The Archbishop of Wales has offered prayers for Aberfan as the community marks the 60th anniversary of the disaster on Wednesday 21 October. In a statement published by the Church in Wales, Cherry Vann reflects on the community’s suffering and the support shown by school staff, rescuers, mourners and people who sought justice.

A message of comfort

The archbishop acknowledges that the disaster raises difficult questions for people of faith and says there are no easy answers. Her Christian reflection locates compassion in the actions of those who helped and in solidarity with people who continue to mourn. She offers prayers for everyone touched by the commemorations across Wales and beyond.

A national moment of reflection

Organisations across Wales have been invited by the Welsh Government to consider a minute’s silence at 9.15am on 21 October, marking the time of the disaster. The invitation allows organisations to take part in a way appropriate to them. The collapse of a colliery spoil tip in 1966 killed 144 people, including 116 children. The government’s announcement says the First Minister and Deputy First Minister are due to attend the official remembrance event with trustees and community representatives.
