Wales invited to observe minute's silence for 60th anniversary of Aberfan

Organisations across Wales are being invited to observe a minute's silence at 9.15am on Wednesday 21 October, marking 60 years since the Aberfan disaster. The Welsh Government says the timing is intended to create a national moment of reflection.

First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth is due to attend the official remembrance event in Aberfan with Deputy First Minister Sioned Williams, Aberfan Trustees and community representatives. Welsh Government staff across its estate will also observe the silence.

An invitation across Wales

The announcement asks organisations to consider taking part in a way that is appropriate to each organisation. It is an invitation rather than a legal requirement, and the Welsh Government has not published a compulsory programme for schools, councils or businesses.

On 21 October 1966, the collapse of a colliery spoil tip above Aberfan killed 144 people, including 116 children. Pantglas Junior School and nearby homes were struck. The memorial garden pictured with this article occupies the former school site.

Museums and archives are preparing commemorations

Amgueddfa Cymru has announced an Aberfan 60 programme at Big Pit National Coal Museum, St Fagans National Museum of History and online. It will bring together objects, oral histories, learning resources and community voices, with displays opening from 1 October.

The National Library of Wales has produced three new copies of the Aberfan Book of Remembrance with the community. The volumes record the names and birth dates of those who died, and one is due to feature in a library exhibition during autumn 2026.

What happens next

The Welsh Government announcement confirms the time of the silence and the First Minister's attendance, but it does not yet give a full public timetable for the official event in Aberfan. Organisations planning an observance will need to publish any local arrangements separately.
