Nia Catrin Williams appointed Dean of Bangor Cathedral

The Revd Nia Catrin Williams has been appointed Dean of Bangor Cathedral and Ministry Area Leader of Bro Deiniol. She will take up the role in January 2027, the Church in Wales has announced. Williams succeeds Manon Ceridwen James, who is now Bishop of Bangor. The appointment concerns the leadership of the cathedral and its ministry area; it is not an announcement that Williams has already started in the post.
Returning to cathedral leadership
Williams is currently Ministry Area Leader of Bro Beuno Sant Uwch Gwyrfai. A first-language Welsh speaker, she previously served as Canon Missioner at Bangor Cathedral from 2012 to 2015 and as Anglican chaplain to Bangor University. Her ministry has also included service as an Armed Forces chaplain. The diocesan announcement says she was ordained priest at St Asaph Cathedral in 1999.
The work ahead
The Church in Wales says the appointment comes as Bangor Cathedral continues to respond to concerns raised in two safeguarding reviews conducted in 2024. It says Williams will support staff and congregations, continue work to rebuild confidence and develop the cathedral’s ministry in the city and wider diocese. That is the Church’s account of ongoing institutional work. The appointment announcement does not establish that every concern has been resolved. It gives January as the start month without naming an installation date.

Where this sits
Appointment precedes the January 2027 start; it does not mean the new dean is already in post.
The Church describes safeguarding work as continuing rather than complete.
