Work on a walking, wheeling and cycling link along the B4601 in Brecon is expected to begin in November, Powys County Council has confirmed. The first phase runs from the Cambrian Way mini-roundabout, near Morrisons petrol station, to the Pen-y-Bryn junction. A second phase towards Brynich Roundabout is planned for 2027/28.

Where the route changes

The scheme will widen the existing footway on the southern, canal side of the road. Most of the route will be shared by people walking and cycling. Within the 20mph zone, however, the footway remains for pedestrians and cyclists continue on the carriageway. The wider project is intended to improve connections towards Groesffordd. It is funded through the Welsh Government’s Active Travel Fund.

Traffic arrangements still to come

The council says traffic management will be needed during construction and that it will try to limit disruption. Its announcement does not give an exact start day, construction duration or detailed temporary traffic arrangements. The November start therefore applies to the first section, rather than completion of the whole route to Brynich.
