Cardigan RNLI volunteers helped a lone sailor on Friday 9 October after a sailing vessel lost engine power and began taking on water on the River Teifi. HM Coastguard tasked the station’s D-class lifeboat at 9am. The RNLI says a small electrical fire in the engine area had been extinguished by the sailor, who had moved safely into a tender.

Vessel secured ahead of high tide

The sailing boat had grounded on a sandbank, with about a metre of water inside its cabin. As there was no anchor aboard, the crew used a spare RNLI anchor to secure it before the next high tide. The crew escorted the sailor in the tender to The Moorings. Rough sea conditions meant the lifeboat was recovered there too. It was returned to the station, refuelled and ready again by midday. Cardigan RNLI’s advice is to check engines and equipment, carry safety equipment and have a reliable way to call for help. In difficulty at sea, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
