Two campaigners who climbed the Crystal Palace television mast during the campaign for a Welsh-language channel are due to contribute to a public broadcasting debate in Aberystwyth today. Cymdeithas yr Iaith names Siôn Aled and Angharad Tomos as speakers at Darlledu: Ddoe, Heddiw ac Yfory, or Broadcasting: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. The event starts at 2.45pm on Saturday 17 October at Canolfan Arad Goch.

From a television channel to digital platforms

The language society says the discussion marks 50 years since the mast protest. The speakers will look back at the campaign for a Welsh-language television channel before a panel considers the language’s current position in broadcasting and what should change. The organiser links that history with the need to secure space for Welsh on digital platforms. It argues that broadcasting and communications decisions should be taken in Wales, rather than campaigners having to take the campaign’s demands to Westminster. The event follows Cymdeithas yr Iaith’s general meeting at Arad Goch. The society says everyone is welcome.
