Cardiff Rugby have appointed Jon Flatman as chief executive, with a return to private ownership and a long-term future at Cardiff Arms Park identified as his main priorities. The club announced on Tuesday that Flatman will join in January. Jamie Muir will remain involved across the business as managing director, so the appointment is not an announcement of Muir’s departure.

Ownership and ground decisions remain ahead

Flatman says his job is to strengthen Cardiff’s commercial foundations so that they can support a competitive team. He describes taking the club back into private, independent ownership and resolving the Arms Park’s long-term future as the two major priorities. Those are objectives for the incoming chief executive. The announcement does not confirm a completed sale, name a buyer, give a transaction value or set out an agreed stadium deal. It also commits the club to developing players through its pathway and clearer, accountable governance.

A move from Barnsley

Flatman, 48, is currently chief executive of Barnsley FC. Cardiff says he joined the football club as chief revenue officer in 2023, became interim chief executive and secured the role permanently in February 2024. His previous work includes consultancy for the Rugby League World Cup and chairing York Rugby League Football Club, where he led its sale. Cardiff also points to his involvement in long-term lease and development agreements at Barnsley’s Oakwell ground.

January start follows August search

Cardiff launched the executive search in August. The board selected Flatman through that process, with the new chief executive due to begin work in January 2027. For supporters, the confirmed change is to the club’s senior leadership. The ownership and stadium questions he has highlighted remain matters for future decisions and announcements.
