Evans targets longer Newport starts after injury setback

Kieron Evans wants to extend his time on the pitch when Newport County face Grimsby Town, after a pre-season injury interrupted the start of his campaign. The midfielder says his last two starts lasted about 65 minutes each and that building beyond that is his next target.

Fitness first, then a place in the side

Speaking to Newport’s club media on 25 September, Evans said he now felt fully fit. He described the frustration of being injured as the season approached and then waiting for an opportunity while the team was winning games. His account sets out a gradual return, rather than a promise that he will complete the next match.

Evans says competition for places has increased and that keeping a starting shirt depends on performances. His focus is on helping the team with and without the ball as he builds his minutes.

Turning home form into away points

Looking back at the Accrington game, Evans said Newport had felt disappointed not to win but valued what he described as their first away point. He wants the side to carry its home performances into away fixtures. Against Grimsby, his immediate aim is more playing time and a win.
