Lampeter wool-history open day to show rare books and archive photographs

Rare books and archive photographs will be brought together at a wool-history open day in Lampeter on Wednesday 28 October. The event starts at 2pm in the Roderic Bowen Library and Archives on UWTSD’s Lampeter campus. Debby Mercer, senior curator at the National Wool Museum and a UWTSD graduate, will give a talk called A Short History of Sheep in Wales.
What visitors will be able to see
UWTSD says the display will draw on its Special Collections, including wool-related tracts dated between 1698 and 1772. Their subjects include wool smuggling, manufacturing and the regulation of prices. The planned display also includes photographs from the 1986 Royal Welsh Show and images of sheepdog trials and shearing from the 1980s. Raw and processed wool samples will be shown alongside the books and photographs.
Booking a place
The university says the talk will also consider present-day uses of wool. To ask for more information or book a place, contact Special Collections archivist Nicky Hammond at n.hammond@uwtsd.ac.uk. The announcement does not specify an admission price or finish time. Confirm arrangements with the organiser before travelling.
