Matthew Morgan has returned to Cardiff Arms Park in a coaching post shared between Cardiff Rugby’s academy and Cardiff University. The former Wales full-back will combine the appointment with his existing assistant-coach role at Bridgend Ravens. Cardiff say he has already started academy work and will join the university rugby programme this week.

How the shared role will work

At Cardiff, Morgan will work with the junior academy alongside Saul Nelson and Josh Turnbull, as well as supporting individual players in schools and colleges. His wider pathway work will include the under-18 and under-16 programmes. His university responsibilities include team and backs attack. The club describes the appointment as an early initiative under the partnership announced between the two institutions this month.

From playing to the pathway

Morgan retired in 2023 after 122 Cardiff appearances. The club puts his combined senior playing total for Cardiff, Ospreys and Bristol at more than 200. Cardiff University head of rugby Chris Davies said Morgan’s experience would support the students and the playing pathway. The university’s next BUCS Super Rugby fixture is against Nottingham on 28 October, according to the club announcement.
