Newport City Council announced on 10 September 2026 that Le Pub has planning permission to expand into its upper floors and add a roof terrace.
Le Pub’s upper floors could become arts space and studios, with a roof terrace also approved, Newport City Council has announced. The plans would extend the community-run music venue’s use of its High Street building beyond the existing venue.
The council’s announcement, published on 10 September, says planning permission covers the first, second and third floors. It does not give an opening date for the new spaces or say when building work will start.
From protecting the venue to using more of it
Music Venue Properties bought the building to protect Le Public Space, better known as Le Pub. The expansion would give the building a broader arts role, adding studios and an arts venue above the existing space.
Matthew Otridge, of Music Venue Properties, said: “Securing planning permission is an important first step.” The organisation says it will continue working with partners on the next stage.
What the funding announcement covers
Newport council and the Welsh Government supported development of the project through Transforming Towns. That support helped with the groundwork for the plans; the announcement does not specify a grant amount or confirm a fully funded construction budget.
