Powys prepares next out-of-hours GP contract as 2027 renewal approaches

Powys Teaching Health Board is preparing to seek providers for its next out-of-hours GP contract, ahead of the current agreement ending in September 2027. The board announced the forthcoming procurement on 12 October. Patients should continue to use the service as usual, contacting NHS 111 Wales when their GP practice is closed.

What is changing
The board says suitably qualified organisations, including the current providers, will be able to compete for the service. No new provider has been appointed in this announcement. A supplier engagement event will take place online through Teams on 20 October. The service specification, procurement timetable and tender requirements will be issued through the formal process.
Current care continues
The announcement is about arranging the next contract, rather than closing the service or changing how patients access care now. The board says continuity of urgent general medical care is its priority. It describes the exercise as a routine statutory procurement and says commercial confidentiality will limit what can be shared while it runs. Updates are promised when appropriate and once the process has concluded.
