Thirteen Powys schools secure new libraries with 500 books each

Thirteen Powys primary schools have secured fully funded library packages worth more than £6,500 each, including 500 books per school, the county council announced on Wednesday 23 September. The support comes through the National Literacy Trust’s Libraries for Primaries programme for the 2026/27 academic year.

What the schools receive

Each package includes shelving, seating, an audiobook player and story cards, alongside the books. Two members of staff at each school will receive training focused on reading for pleasure, and the schools will gain National Literacy Trust membership and further literacy resources. The council says the aim is to establish or improve dedicated reading spaces.

The 13 schools selected

The council names Penygloddfa C.P. School; Buttington Trewern C.P. School; Carreghofa C.P. School; Ysgol Gynradd Llanfair-ym-Muall / Builth Wells C.P. School; Ysgol Golwg Pen Y Fan; Ysgol Bro Caereinion; St Mary’s R.C. (A) School; Llangattock C.I.W. Primary School; Abermule Primary School; Llanelwedd C.I.W. School; Sennybridge C.P. School; Priory C.I.W. School; and Ysgol Gymraeg Dyffryn Y Glowyr.

A separate community library project

Ysgol Maesydderwen has also secured grant funding to develop its community library, with access intended for learners, families and the wider community. That is a separate project from the 13 primary-school packages. The council has not stated its grant value or given opening dates for the individual new spaces.
