Powys tenants forum planned after survey flags rent and repair concerns

Powys County Council is setting up a forum for private tenants after a survey raised concerns about affordability, property conditions, limited choice and long-term security.

Thirty people completed the survey and 24 described themselves as current private tenants. The council said respondents reported pressure from high rents, deposits and advance rent, as well as difficulty finding suitable homes. Because the response group was small, the findings describe those respondents rather than every private tenant in Powys.

Repairs and energy efficiency were also raised

Respondents also cited repairs, energy efficiency, landlord standards and the effect of short-term holiday lets on the supply of long-term rented homes. Survey respondents said a forum could improve access to information about tenants' rights, strengthen accountability and give renters a collective voice.

First meeting on 29 October

The first meeting will run online through Microsoft Teams from 5pm to 6pm on Thursday 29 October 2026. Private tenants must register in advance using the form linked by the council.

The meeting will cover the survey findings, sources of help and advice, and how the forum should operate. The council says the tenants forum will sit alongside its existing landlords forum, which shares guidance on regulation, property standards, registration and licensing.
