Women registered with eight Tywi/Taf GP practices can refer themselves for specialist psychological support for menopause or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), Hywel Dda University Health Board has announced. The service offers an initial assessment followed by separate cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) groups for menopause and PMDD. It is commissioned by the Tywi/Taf Cluster until April 2027, rather than being available to everyone across the health board’s area.

Which practices are covered?

The eligible practices are Coach & Horses Surgery, Furnace House Surgery, Llanfair Surgery in Llandovery and Meddygfa Taf. Women registered with Meddygfa Teilo, Meddygfa Tywi, Morfa Lane Surgery and St Peter’s Surgery are also eligible to seek a referral. Registration with one of these practices is the access condition stated in the announcement.

What the groups involve

The menopause programme has seven weekly sessions; the PMDD programme has eight. Each session lasts 90 minutes and takes place remotely through Microsoft Teams. Patients have an assessment before joining a group. The board says questionnaires are completed before and after treatment to help evaluate the service. The announcement does not publish treatment results, a waiting time or a guarantee of a place.

How to ask for an assessment

Self-referrals can be made by calling 01267 239714 or emailing ClinicalHealth.Psychology.HDD@wales.nhs.uk. Healthcare professionals can also make referrals. The announcement describes a specialist psychology service for the emotional impact of menopause and PMDD. It does not announce a general menopause clinic or a change to medication services.
