Nevill Hall radiotherapy unit records 5,988 visits in first year
The Velindre @ Nevill Hall Radiotherapy Unit recorded 5,988 patient attendances during its first 12 months, according to figures published by Velindre University NHS Trust.

The Abergavenny unit delivered 5,411 radiotherapy treatment appointments and 577 CT scanning appointments. Those categories add exactly to the published attendance total.
Who the unit has treated
Velindre says 262 breast cancer patients and 196 prostate cancer patients have received radiotherapy at the unit. Palliative radiotherapy has also been introduced, with 17 patients receiving that treatment since the service expanded.
Most visits were for treatment
Radiotherapy treatments account for 90.4% of the 5,988 recorded attendances, with CT scans making up 9.6%. These are appointment shares, not shares of individual patients, because one patient can attend more than once.
What the travel claim tells us
The trust says the unit helped patients and families avoid more than 3,000 miles of travel. It does not publish the calculation, the comparison route or the number of people behind that estimate. The figure therefore shows a claimed benefit but cannot be converted into an average saving per patient.
A £38 million expansion
The facility was developed with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board through Velindre’s Integrated Radiotherapy Solution programme. It operates as an extension of Velindre Cancer Centre and was designed to increase radiotherapy capacity in south-east Wales by up to 20%.
