Wrexham to consult on lower reception intakes at two schools

Wrexham Council has approved consultations on reducing the number of children admitted to reception at St Peter’s CIW Primary School in Rossett and Rhosddu School. The Executive Board approved the consultations on 13 October. Residents will be able to give their views from 3 November until 17 December 2026. The consultation has not opened yet.

What is being proposed
The council says both schools requested a review of their published admission numbers. These figures set the number of children a school admits into its reception year; the announcement is about that intake, rather than a decision to close either school. Councillor Phil Wynn, the council’s lead member for education, said demand for primary places across Wrexham had reduced and was expected to keep falling. He said matching admission numbers more closely to projected demand could help the schools manage their budgets and resources. That is the council’s stated reason for consulting. The release does not provide the pupil-demand projections behind the proposal.
What parents still need to see
The announcement does not set out either school’s current admission number, the proposed replacement number or the school year in which a change would take effect. It cannot yet establish how many reception places would be removed. Approval to consult is a stage before any decision to reduce admissions. Parents should check the published consultation documents when the process opens on 3 November, including the detailed numbers and how to respond. There is no confirmed closure, change to a current pupil’s place or staffing reduction in this announcement.
