Becky North becomes Beicio Cymru president

Becky North has been appointed president of Beicio Cymru, with the former track cyclist setting out an ambition to bring more women and children into the sport. The governing body announced the appointment on Thursday 15 October. North, who previously served as an ambassador, said the role offered a way to give back after coming through the Welsh cycling pathway.

Opportunities beyond racing
North wants cycling to be accessible to people who ride socially or use a bike in everyday life, as well as those aiming to compete. The announcement includes an interview in which she discusses encouraging girls and women to ride and giving more children the opportunity to learn. These are priorities North has outlined for the role. The notice does not set out a funded schools programme, a participation target or a timetable for delivering one.
Two Olympic silvers
North raced under the name Becky James. Beicio Cymru records silver medals in the sprint and keirin at Rio 2016, alongside two world titles in 2013. Swansea University’s honorary-award biography also identifies her as a Welsh former professional track cyclist. Beicio Cymru chief executive Caroline Spanton welcomed the appointment, pointing to North’s experience and connection to Welsh cycling. The new role is a governing-body appointment, rather than an announcement of a return to competition.
