Blackmill bridge works to start in January, with a long A4061 closure from April

Work to replace the A4061 bridge at Blackmill is due to begin in January 2027, Bridgend County Borough Council has confirmed, with an extended road closure from April 2027 while the bridge deck is removed and replaced. There will be other closure periods from January for utility and preparatory work. The council says there are no set durations for any of the closures.
Diversions and schools
Drivers will be diverted via the A4093 at Llangeinor. Signs will go up at least four weeks before work starts, including in wider areas so people can plan journeys. Arrangements are still being confirmed with school transport providers, and any changes will be sent directly to parents.
Why it is happening
Routine inspections identified issues with the bridge's structure. The council previously secured £3.5 million in Welsh Government regional transport funding, and the contractor is Centregreat Limited. Cllrs Gary Haines and Eugene Caparros, joint Cabinet Members for Climate Change and the Environment, said the works were safety-driven emergency highways maintenance and that every effort would be made to minimise disruption. A public meeting was held earlier this week, with further meetings planned for specific communities and businesses.
