Danny Holmes takes charge at Flint three days after Fowler exit

Flint Town United have appointed Danny Holmes as first-team manager, three days after announcing Lee Fowler’s departure. The former Newport County and Tranmere player takes over with the club seeking a better start to its Cymru Premier campaign.

A quick appointment before Ammanford

Flint’s board parted company with Fowler on Monday after reviewing the opening ten games. The club said results and performances had fallen far short of expectations and wanted a successor in place quickly, with Ammanford due to visit on Saturday. Thursday’s announcement comes two days before that match.

What Holmes brings

Holmes began his managerial career at Vauxhall Motors in October 2023. Flint credits him with 44 wins in 100 matches there, equivalent to a 44% win rate across the games counted in the announcement. The club says he left at the end of last season. That record is background to the appointment, not a prediction of results at Flint.

Experience across Welsh football

As a player, Holmes won a league title with The New Saints and two more with Connah’s Quay Nomads, according to Flint. His career also took him through Bangor City and Colwyn Bay, where he worked as a player-coach, as well as a season at Newport County after leaving Tranmere in 2015.

The task at Flint

The club has set Holmes the task of improving its league position and securing its place in the Cymru Premier. The announcement does not specify the length of his contract or set out a new backroom team. Flint’s earlier statement thanked Fowler for four years at the club, including last season’s Welsh Cup final run.
