England have called up Aneurin Donald at 29, and the series comes to his old Glamorgan ground

Donald scored 489 runs in 12 Vitality Blast matches captaining Derbyshire Falcons this season and hit 37 sixes, more than any other batter in the competition. He made his name with a 234 for Glamorgan in 2016 and left the club in 2018. England named a 16-player squad, not a team.

England have named Aneurin Donald in the 16-player squad for the three Vitality IT20s against Sri Lanka, the first England Men's call-up of the 29-year-old's career. The England and Wales Cricket Board announced two squads on Friday and describes Donald as an opening batter. He captains Derbyshire Falcons Men in white-ball cricket, and in this season's Vitality Blast he scored 489 runs in 12 matches and hit 37 sixes, more than any other batter in the competition. The second match of the IT20 series is at Sophia Gardens on Thursday 17 September, a 6.30pm start, on the ground where Donald played his county cricket for Glamorgan.

The Glamorgan years

Donald is from Gorseinon, near Swansea, and started his career with Glamorgan before leaving in 2018; Derbyshire, who signed him from Hampshire, call him "the former Glamorgan and Hampshire batter". He was 19 when he made 234 from 136 balls for Glamorgan against Derbyshire in July 2016, with 15 sixes and 26 fours, reaching his hundred, his 150 and his double hundred each with a six. He got to 200 from 123 balls, equalling Ravi Shastri's 1985 record for the fastest double century in first-class cricket. Derbyshire still list that innings among his career standout moments. Speaking to BBC Sport Wales before last month's Hundred final, Donald said: "I'm always correcting people that I'm playing as a Welshman, not an Englishman, and it's something I'll always push."

What the selector said

Marcus North, England Men's national selector, said Donald and the uncapped Sussex seamer Henry Crocombe are "two promising players who have earned their places on the back of impressive performances in domestic cricket". North added: "Aneurin has had an exceptional season for Derbyshire in the Vitality Blast and also with Trent Rockets in The Hundred." Derbyshire count 1,253 Vitality Blast runs for Donald since 2024, 13 of them half-centuries, at a strike rate above 200. One of those fifties, off 13 balls against Yorkshire in 2025, equalled the fastest in the competition's history.

What is fixed and what is not

A squad is not a team. England named 16 players for three matches, and nothing published on Friday says who plays in Cardiff or where Donald bats. No Glamorgan player is in either the IT20 or the ODI squad. What is fixed is the date: Glamorgan carry England against Sri Lanka on their own fixture list for 17 September at 6.30pm at Sophia Gardens, and tickets are on sale.
