Glamorgan lose by an innings and 257 runs after scores of 69 and 65

Warwickshire won by an innings and 257 runs on 9 September, completing the match inside two days. Warwickshire’s 391 all out secured a first-innings lead of 322. Glamorgan followed 69 with 65 all out in 26.1 overs, with Ed Barnard taking five wickets for 13 runs. Day one, 8 September: Glamorgan dismissed for 69

Glamorgan were bowled out for 69 by Warwickshire at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Tuesday 8 September, on the first day of a four-day Rothesay County Championship match. The innings lasted 26.3 overs, which is 159 legal deliveries. Warwickshire then batted 40 overs for 154 for 3, and at stumps both clubs' match centres put it plainly: Warwickshire lead Glamorgan by 85 runs with seven wickets remaining. Glamorgan’s second innings had not begun at the close of day one. Extras made up 8 of the 69, and no Glamorgan batter reached 20.

Rain held the start until 13:30, and Kiran Carlson chose to bat. Ethan Bamber took five wickets for 28 runs from eight overs, an economy rate of 3.50 and the only five-wicket haul of the innings. He bowled Jack Hope-Bell and Kiran Carlson for nought inside the first seven overs, had Ben Kellaway caught for 3 with Glamorgan 9 for 3, and bowled Colin Ingram for 19 at 39 for 5. Ingram top scored, from 19 balls, four of which he hit to the boundary. Ed Barnard took three wickets for five runs from five overs, an economy of 1.00, ending with Timm van der Gugten leg before for nought. Olly Hannon-Dalby took one for 19 from seven overs, and Manav Suthar bowled Mir Hamza in three balls to finish the innings. Four Glamorgan batters were out without scoring. Jamie McIlroy, batting at ten, was 8 not out at the other end, and every run of the last pair's stand of eight was his.

Warwickshire came into the day third in Division One on 162 points from 11 matches, Glamorgan fifth on 124 from the same 11, three won, four lost and four drawn. Sussex are fourth on 140, and Surrey are sixth on 124, level with Glamorgan on points. Below Surrey are Essex on 122, Yorkshire on 120 and Leicestershire on 113, with Hampshire bottom of the ten counties on 88. Somerset lead on 167, from Nottinghamshire on 163. This is one of the three Championship games Glamorgan have left: a trip to Surrey on 15 September and Essex at Sophia Gardens on 24 September. It is the first Championship meeting of the two counties at Sophia Gardens since 6 June 2008.

Correction and update, 8 September 2026

This piece was filed at 17:15, during play, and said Warwickshire had reached 74 for one, five runs ahead. It has been brought up to the close of the first day: 154 for 3, a lead of 85. The picture caption on the earlier version said the ground was photographed after an early finish, which was wrong: play was going on when the piece was filed and ran to stumps. The earlier version also named nine of the ten Division One counties, leaving out Sussex, who are fourth on 140 points.

Correction, 9 September 2026: an earlier version said Jamie McIlroy was the eleventh man. He batted at ten; Mir Hamza was the last man and was bowled. The Division One list also left out Nottinghamshire, who are second on 163.
