The M4 was congested westbound through Newport, between junction 24 at Coldra and junction 26 at Malpas, through Thursday afternoon and evening. Traffic Wales first published the alert at 15:38 on Thursday and rated the hold-up as moderate. It said delays were possible and expected the road to clear by the end of the day. The alert was still live when this desk re-read it at 18:34.

Traffic Wales published no cause, no diversion and no clearance time beyond the end of Thursday. There is no quick alternative: the A48 runs roughly parallel through Newport but takes traffic through the city rather than around it. A second alert, on the A4232 northbound between the A48 interchange and M4 junction 33 at Capel Llanilltern west of Cardiff, was published at 15:36 and Traffic Wales marked it clear at 18:21.

Update, 12:50 on Friday 4 September: alert 594094 no longer appears on the Traffic Wales road traffic alerts list, checked at 12:50. Traffic Wales has published no separate all clear, and gave no time for when the alert came down. This brief has been put into the past tense.
