An extra £500,000 will go towards repairing Torfaen’s roads before winter, the council has announced. The money is for large-scale patching on sections considered vulnerable to further damage in cold, wet weather. It is additional capital funding, separate from the five-year £6.4 million Better Roads resurfacing programme launched last year.

Where resurfacing is planned

Torfaen says 23 resurfacing schemes have been completed so far this financial year, following 38 roads resurfaced in 2025–26. Broad Street in Blaenavon, Crumlin Road in Pontypool and Turberville Road in Northfield are among this year’s completed work. Foundry Road in Abersychan, Old Abergavenny Road in New Inn and the A4043 Pontypool to Pontypool Fawr are among the routes due for resurfacing by the end of the year. These are Better Roads schemes, rather than a list of sites for the new patching allocation.

How the programmes differ

Better Roads aims to resurface an estimated 80 roads between 2025 and 2030. Its £6.4 million funding comprises £4 million of capital investment and £2.4 million through the Welsh Government’s Local Government Borrowing Initiative. The council will publish weekly resurfacing updates in its news bulletin and social channels.
