Christian Doidge’s injury absence will give another Newport County attacker an opportunity against York City, with Hayden Mullins pointing to Shaquille Gwengwe and Jed Garner among his options. The manager was speaking before Saturday’s League Two match at Rodney Parade. Doidge’s experience and understanding of Newport’s approach will be missed, Mullins told the club’s website.

A place for someone to take

“It’s an opportunity for someone,” Mullins said as he discussed the choices available to cover the absence. He named Gwengwe and Garner in that discussion, without announcing a starting side. Mullins says Newport’s approach has to reflect the qualities in the squad. He also places more importance on the result than possession figures, describing a group that believes it can make games difficult for opponents.

Confidence before the home test

The manager says County have maintained an unbeaten start at home and praises the close-knit dressing room. He singled out Cameron Norman’s experience, versatility and influence since returning to the club. York arrive at Rodney Parade on Saturday 17 October. Mullins expects a difficult game and a good brand of football from the visitors, with Newport’s attacking selection now part of the preparation.
