Penrhyn quarry hospital conservation marked with Bethesda event

Tuesday’s gathering will explain work to protect the historic ruins, with a chance to visit the site afterwards.

Conservation of Penrhyn Quarry Hospital will be marked at a community event in Bethesda on Tuesday 29 September, with an opportunity to visit the protected remains afterwards. Welsh Slate announced the event on 22 September after supplying materials for the project led by Cyngor Gwynedd and Cadw. The work has stabilised the historic structure, rather than returned it to use as a hospital.

Tuesday’s arrangements

The event at Neuadd Ogwen runs from 5pm to 6pm, with refreshments from 4.30pm. It will be held in Welsh with simultaneous translation. Organiser Partneriaeth Ogwen will provide transport for the site visit.

What needed protecting

The Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales annual report for 2024–25 records urgent work at the hospital in 2024, followed by a plan to secure the building’s long-term stability. Its ambition was public access and on-site interpretation. The report also records visits arranged with Partneriaeth Ogwen so local residents could learn about the hospital’s history and the conservation techniques. Tuesday’s event continues that public engagement; it is not an announcement of a new medical service.
