Pontsticill Road repairs to start next week, with closure lasting through the works

Repairs to Pontsticill Road are due to begin in the week starting 28 September, with Merthyr Tydfil council expecting the work to finish by the end of March 2027.

The road will remain closed throughout construction. The completion date is an estimate, rather than a confirmed reopening date.

What the work involves

The council has awarded the contract to Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Limited. The scheme includes strengthening the road edge, raising and rebuilding the carriageway, and constructing a reinforced slope.

Five new highway culverts will replace damaged ones beneath the road. New drainage channels, stone cascades and replacement manholes above the landslip area are also planned to manage surface water.

The council says the design has been agreed in principle with Welsh Water, Natural Resources Wales and the relevant private landowners. Further progress updates are promised over the coming months.

The announcement does not give a diversion route or a construction cost.
