Wrexham tap-in train fares: where they work and when to buy a ticket

Travellers using Transport for Wales trains around Wrexham can pay by tapping a contactless bank card or device at the start and end of a journey. But passengers entitled to child or railcard discounts should compare a conventional ticket before tapping in: those discounts are not included in pay as you go.

Use the same card or device

Tap in at the station validator or enabled gate before travelling, then tap out at the destination with the same card or device. Wrexham Council’s September reminder warns that failing to complete both taps can lead to additional charges.

Where it works now

TfW lists 15 stations in its initial North Wales area, from Wrexham Central and Wrexham General to Bidston. The scheme is valid on TfW services within that area, not for journeys into the separate South Wales pay-as-you-go network.

At the 24 September check, TfW also warned that pay as you go was temporarily unavailable at Shotton because of maintenance. Its advice is to seek staff support and use the TfW app or website to complete the journey. Check the operator’s notice before relying on a validator there.

What the fares mean

TfW’s published examples include £3.90 for an Upton–Wrexham General single and £7.80 for a return. The table below uses the operator’s figures. TfW says it will apply a cheaper equivalent Anytime or seven-day season fare where appropriate; that does not mean contactless beats every discounted ticket.

The next stations are not confirmed open

Wrexham Council says ten more stations are planned for late September, including Chester, Rhyl, Prestatyn, Flint, Ruabon, Chirk and Gobowen. TfW’s current network page still lists them as a future expansion. Do not assume a contactless bank card is already a valid ticket for those journeys.

Use TfW’s current network map and fare checker before travelling. The North Wales scheme is for standard-class TfW travel; it does not cover GWR services or First Class.
