Four in every five shots Wrexham take come from inside the box, a higher share than any club in the Championship manages

Wrexham have taken 71 shots in six Championship matches and 57 of the 71 from inside the opposition box. That share, 80.28 per cent, is the highest of the 24 clubs in the division, with West Ham United next on 79.35 per cent. Read it the other way round and it is starker still: 14 shots from outside the box in six matches, 2.33 a game, fewer than any club in the Championship, with Derby County next on 2.60. Wrexham do not shoot on sight. The figures are API-Football's, from the 66 fixtures for which the provider has published team statistics this season, rounds one to six, all 24 clubs covered.

What the discipline has been worth so far

Shot selection is a virtue that has to turn into goals eventually, and at Wrexham it has not yet. Seven goals have come from 23 shots on target, 30.43 per cent, which is 16th of the 24 clubs, and the volume is modest too: 11.83 shots a game, also 16th. The table reads accordingly. Wrexham are 13th on seven points from six, with one win, one defeat and four draws, a draw count that is joint-highest in the Championship alongside Cardiff City and Birmingham City. Only Birmingham City, unbeaten in five, have lost fewer.

Moore, and where the ball ends up

Kieffer Moore has played 375 minutes across six appearances and contested 82 duels in that time, the provider's count of one-against-one contests for the ball, which is more than all but two players in the Championship on the raw count and third in the division at 19.68 for every 90 minutes played, in a pool of 236 who have played 270 league minutes or more. Moore has won 41 of the 82. Seven of his shots have been on target, joint-fifth in the division, level with Andre Brooks of Norwich City and Isaac Price of West Bromwich Albion. Moore has started five of the six matches and been substituted in every one, at 72, 63, 79, 73 and 61 minutes, and came on for the last 27 at Swansea City. The provider's figures do not connect one number to the other, but the shape the two suggest together is a familiar one: the ball goes towards a centre forward who wins his share of it, in hour-long instalments, and the attempts that follow come from close range.

The floor under it has held

The defending is the other reason the draws keep happening rather than the defeats. Wrexham have faced 59 shots in six matches, 9.83 a game, joint second-fewest of the 24 clubs alongside Swansea City and behind Birmingham City on 9.80, and only 20 of those were on target, 3.33 a game and joint fourth-fewest in the division, level with Blackburn Rovers. Five goals have been conceded. Across the four matches for which API-Football has published expected goals, the provider's estimate of what a side's chances were worth, Wrexham have allowed 0.85 a game, second-lowest of the 24 behind Wolverhampton Wanderers on 0.77, though the provider has published that figure for 39 of the season's 66 fixtures, so every club's number rests on a different handful of matches.

Burnley on Tuesday, West Ham United on Friday

Burnley were the exception on Tuesday. Wrexham drew 1-1 at the Racecourse Ground in front of 10,494, of whom 1,267 had travelled from Burnley, having taken 15 shots with 13 of the 15 inside the box and faced 19 shots, more than in any other match this season. Zeki Amdouni put Burnley ahead on 26 minutes and Jacques Ekomié equalised on 55. Next is the London Stadium at 20:00 on Friday 11 September, against a West Ham United side top of the Championship on 11 points from six and, of all the clubs in the division, the one that shoots most like Wrexham: 79.35 per cent of West Ham United's attempts come from inside the box, the second-highest share of the 24 and just behind Wrexham's 80.28. Wrexham will not get many sights of goal there. On this season's evidence, the ones that come will be taken from close in.

The limits. Every league rank here comes from the 66 Championship fixtures for which API-Football has published team statistics, rounds one to six. Per-game rates compare cleanly across the division; raw totals do not, because twelve clubs have played six matches and twelve have played five, which is why the shots from outside the box are given both ways. The expected-goals line covers four of Wrexham's six matches. The scorers, the attendance and Moore's substitution minutes are the club's own record rather than the provider's.
