The A40 is open again at Bwlch, after a crash shut it on Saturday afternoon between Brecon and Crickhowell
Traffic Wales had the trunk road closed in both directions at Bwlch, in Powys in mid Wales, from Saturday afternoon until some time overnight. Another stretch of the A40, at Monmouth, closes overnight from tonight until 10 September for resurfacing.

The A40 has reopened at Bwlch, a village in Powys in mid Wales, on the main road between the towns of Brecon and Crickhowell. Traffic Wales listed the road as shut in both directions from Saturday afternoon after a crash, between the Cefn Brynich roundabout on the eastern edge of Brecon and the Tretower junction west of Crickhowell, with a diversion in place and delays. Nobody has said publicly whether anyone was hurt. The alert, reference RNMDA_2026131632, was stamped last updated at 22:45 on Saturday and listed the closure as running until further notice. It was gone from the Traffic Wales live alerts board when Cover read all four pages of it on Sunday morning, and the alert page now redirects to the board index. Traffic Wales never published the time the road reopened.
A40 closures this week at Monmouth
Two stretches of the A40 at Monmouth, at the far eastern end of the road, close overnight this week for resurfacing. The first shuts tonight. The southbound carriageway between the Dixton roundabout and the Gibraltar tunnels is closed from 7 to 10 September, 20:00 to 06:00, with diversions in place. The northbound carriageway between the A449 interchange, where the A40 meets the road to Newport, and the Dixton roundabout goes the same way from 8 to 10 September, on the same hours.
What we don't know
Traffic Wales did not say what caused the crash, whether anyone was hurt, or when the road reopened. It said a diversion was in place but never named a route, so drivers who travelled it overnight had only the signs on the ground to go on. Dyfed-Powys Police, the force that covers Bwlch, has issued no statement about it. At 20:55 on Monday, two days after the crash, its news page still carried nothing later than a sentencing in Milford Haven published on 3 September. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue, the service for Powys, has posted nothing on it either.

Updated on Sunday 6 September, after the road reopened. An earlier version reported the closure as running until further notice, which is what Traffic Wales listed at the time.
Correction, 7 September 2026: an earlier correction gave a closure start of 15:16 and Traffic Wales reopening estimates of 23:00 and Sunday. None is in Cover's record of the alert, which says Traffic Wales gave no estimate. All three are withdrawn, along with a closure length derived from those figures.
