Proposals to restore passenger trains between Aberdare and Hirwaun are open for public feedback, with possible new stations at Llwydcoed and Hirwaun. Transport for Wales launched the engagement on 12 October with Rhondda Cynon Taf council. Residents, businesses and commuters have until 22 November 2026 to respond. The first drop-in is at Aberdare’s Sobell Leisure Centre on 14 October.

What is being considered

The proposal would reopen the existing railway corridor north of Aberdare, previously used for freight, for passenger services. TfW is also considering how it could connect with walking, wheeling, cycling and other public transport. Its project page includes a possible future extension to the Tower Colliery site. That remains a possibility being explored, rather than a confirmed station or route.

Funding and design are still undecided

TfW says delivery funding has not been secured. No final decision has been made on the design, type of railway or whether the scheme will proceed. This is early public engagement, not a statutory consultation on a final scheme. Responses will inform further design work and the business case. TfW intends to review feedback over winter 2026/27 and publish an engagement report in February 2027. Those are project-development milestones, not an opening timetable for passenger services.

How to have your say

The online survey is on TfW’s Aberdare to Hirwaun project page, linked below. TfW says it takes about five minutes. It asks for local priorities, opportunities and concerns. Two public drop-ins are listed, both from 3.30pm to 6pm: Sobell Leisure Centre, The Ynys, Aberdare, CF44 7RP, on 14 October; and Hirwaun Village Hall, High Street, Hirwaun, CF44 9SL, on 20 October. The engagement closes on 22 November. The published information does not give a closing hour or a confirmed start date for construction.
